Holiday Guide Turkey

Situated in the Balkan region of Southeast Europe, Turkey is a country rich in history, culture and scenic landscapes. With many interesting activities and historic sites to see, Turkey has become a popular tourist destination. From basking in the sun on the Mediterranean coast or enjoying the green windswept hills and magnificent temples, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Scuba diving in and around Turkey is amazing with some fantastic dive sites including sunken ships, underwater caverns and the remains of ancient cities. With mountains of all shapes and sizes, climbers from all over the world come to Turkey to experience its many climbing opportunities. There are also many less adventurous but still breathtaking treks and hiking trails available.

With Turkey being located on top of a large geothermal belt, natural hot springs and mud pools are in abundance. There are many thermal resorts throughout the country offering natural and therapeutic treatments that involve the springs, which are rich in minerals and vitamins.

Throughout the country you will find an array of accommodations to suit everyone's tastes and budgets. Many beachside villas and bungalows are available along the Aegean coastline while beautiful retreats are set in the mountains.

In the large city of Istanbul, a great variety of nightlife entertainment can be found. There is an abundance of nightclubs playing electronic music, chilled-out trendy bars and a huge selection of restaurants to dine in. The vibrant city is truly comparable to other major European cities.

Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport is well served by many international carriers offering flights to and from most major cities around the world. Turkey is very well connected to the rest of mainland Europe by road and rail; high-speed trains travel to many cities on a daily basis. Buses can also be taken from neighbouring countries. Driving to Turkey is possible but be careful on the roads, as local drivers do not always obey the rules.

When travelling through Turkey be alert to pick-pockets, bag snatchings and muggings, especially in the larger cities where organised gangs target tourists. Try not to exhibit any items of value or leave them where they can easily be snatched. The roads can be dangerous in Turkey so be careful if hiring a car. For these reasons and peace of mind whilst travelling, be sure to take out an insurance policy before leaving home.
