Albania Holiday Guide
Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, along the Adriatic and Ionian seas, lies the mesmerising country of Albania. Quickly becoming a top travel destination, Albania is overflowing with unspoilt natural beauty.
Albania boasts turquoise seas, spectacular beaches, tranquil lakes, raging rivers and awe-inspiring snow-peaked mountains. The people of Albania are legendary for their warmth and welcoming spirit. Among its most famous citizens is the great Mother Theresa.
The country offers a wonderful mishmash of civilisations and cultures, making Albania truly distinctive with a very eclectic feel. The country is home to Butrint, one of the world's archaeological wonders as well as a World Heritage site. Butrint is situated in Albania's southern region and gives visitors a glimpse of Mediterranean civilisation during the Bronze Age.
The city of Berati is situated near the Osum River and is the commercial hub for the agricultural region. Berati is built on an ancient Illyrian site dating from the 6th century BC. The city is overflowing with significant monuments and old architectural treasures, such as a 15th century mosque and a 13th century citadel built along an elevated ridge above the river canyon. In addition, the charming houses, old churches and an intriguing museum make this city well worth visiting.
The capital city Tirana is scenically situated between the mountain ranges of the Dajti and the coastal plains. The city is filled with glorious attractions that range from the Venetian Tower at the harbour to the Medieval Town Wall. There is also an ancient amphitheatre that dates back to the 2nd century which is a definite 'must-see' when visiting Albania.
Gjirokastra, the 'Stone City', is located in Albania's southern region along the eastern slopes of the Mali i Gjere mountains. Gjirokastra is home to numerous 18th century mosques and churches as well as an ancient citadel. This museum city is characterised by its unique houses that are made from stone, which appear like small fortresses.
