With a past steeped in Maritime history, Portugal is situated along the picturesque Algarve coastline. Many beautiful cities span over this scenic land, each bringing its own flair and charm. Portugal is full of culture, with many museums, art galleries and historic castles making the country a very popular tourist destination.

The beaches scattered down the lovely Algarve coastline offer great stretches of white sand and blue water perfect for swimming and enjoying the sun. Travelling throughout Portugal is inexpensive and very easy; hotels are abundant and range from budget to five-star accommodations. The weather is great year-round, but summer is the most popular time for tourists. With an abundance of great restaurants and world class local wines, Portugal is the perfect getaway.

The capital of Portugal is Lisbon, a labyrinth of cobbled streets with many open-aired piazzas throughout. There are endless choices in terms of cafés and restaurants, while bustling markets sell a range of items from crafts to sweets. After getting lost in the charming and ancient cobbled lanes, the beautiful hilly suburbs that sit along the Tejo river are also worth a visit. Some exquisite art, sculptures, ceramics and artefacts from around the world can be viewed in the many museums and galleries throughout town.

Another great city in Portugal to visit is Oporto, which is located in the north of the country. With the magnificent Douro river running through the town, Oporto is famous for its bridges and port wine. The city is also known for its characteristic sailboats, Barcos Rabelos, which used to transport the port wine from the vineyards. They still can be seen in June when thecity hosts an annual race. With breathtaking coastlines and fishing villages situated close by, seafood restaurants are plentiful.

Portugal is easily accessible with international flights going to and from Lisbon International Airport, which is located just a few miles from Lisbon's city centre. Portugal's national carrier, TAP Air, makes flying to the other cities throughout the country a breeze. Driving around Portugal is a great idea to visit all of the Portugal tourist attractions. Trains do travel from Madrid to Lisbon but are often packed with European students travelling during the summer months.
