The principality of Andorra is a small country in Western Europe, beautifully situated in the eastern Pyrenees mountains and bordered by Spain and France. This once secluded country has emerged as a world-class travel destination, largely due to its spectacular skiing opportunities as well as its duty-free status.
Andorra is more than most just a winter sports country; this tiny destination has a number of towns that are not only scenically beautiful, but also have a rich history and numerous attractions. Andorra is a year-round destination and has a variety of summer sports on offer including heli-skiing, heli-hiking and hiking and trekking along the beautiful mountain ranges.
Andorra la Vella is the capital of the co-principality of Andorra, and is also the name of the parish that surrounds it. The city's old town is characterised by charming cobblestone streets and wonderfully persevered houses. One of the most visited attractions is the 11th century Saint Stephen Church. Built in a Romanesque style, this is one of the most significant religious structures in the region. The city is also the country's cultural hub, with a vibrant theatre scene and a museum.
Pal-Arinsal is a little village just north of Andorra La Vella. The area has seen rapid development in recent years, adding to its already impressive tourism infrastructure. This ski resort town is popular with beginner-level skiers and has a very youthful atmosphere, as can be seen in its trendy bars and discos. Both of the quaint Alpine villages of Pal and Arinsal offer a range of hotels and eateries as well as wonderful childcare facilities.
As with most places that draw a young crowd, snowboarding has become a major sport in Andorra. Many of the resorts now boast snowboarding trails and fun-parks among their facilities.
Soldeu resort is one of the most popular areas in Andorra as it offers low prices, great skiing opportunities and a lively nightlife. The skiing slopes are among the best in the region. El Tarter also has impressive slopes but seems to be a more relaxed and tranquil spot than Soldeu and makes for a perfect destination for vacationing families.
Other popular resort areas include Ordino-Arcalis, situated in the northwestern region and Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig, which is nestled in the east.
