Ankara is the capital city of Turkey and is filled with amazing historic buildings, culture and a rich heritage, it a great place to experience the real essence of Turkey. From taking in the local charm of the city to enjoying some local wine in nearby towns, Ankara has is becoming a popular tourist destination.

When walking through the Ankara centre you will notice many statues and monuments. In Guvenlik Park sits the impressive monument to a 'Secure and Safe Future,' which is an icon the locals are very proud of. Other monuments include the Victory Monument in Ulus Square, built in memory of the fallen heroes of the War of Independence.

Ankara Tourist Attractions

Tourists up for some local shopping should try the street markets at Cikrikcilar Yokusu, which is near Ulus Square. The markets are full of local handicrafts and other interesting items, from satin fabrics to ornaments perfect for souvenirs. After a stroll though the markets you can stop off at one of the many cafes and watch the world go by.

Not far away from Ankara are the picturesque rolling mountains of Cappadocia, where you will find many interesting monasteries and cave dwellings built many years ago. The soil in this area is particularly fertile and rich, making it perfect for growing grapes. The area has many vineyards, which are quite famous in the area. Wine tours and tastings are a great way for tourists to learn about the Turkish wine industry. Ankara, like most ancient city's, is full of interesting museums. The Anitkabir, an imposing building in itself, holds the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Across from there is a museum housing a wax statue of Atatürk along with his writings and personal items. There is the Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum with its rich collection of Turkish art from the late 19th century up until today.

Transport Around Ankara

Ankara's Esenboga International Airport is situated just 20 miles from the city centre. The airport receives daily domestic flights and many international arrivals from most European cities. There are express night trains departing from Istanbul's Haydarpasa Train Station arriving in Ankara daily. Alternatively you can take a bus from Istanbul, which takes approximately six hours.
