Ankara Travel Guide

Located in the heart of Turkey, Ankara is the capital city and is filled with amazing historic buildings, culture and a rich heritage, which makes it a great place to experience the real essence of Turkey. From taking in the local charm of the city to enjoying some local wine in nearby towns, Ankara has something for everyone.

When walking through the city centre you will notice many statues and monuments. In Guvenlik Park sits the impressive monument to a 'Secure and Safe Future,' which is an icon the locals are very proud of. Other monuments include the Victory Monument in Ulus Square, built in memory of the fallen heroes of the War of Independence.

Tourist Attractions Around Ankara

For some local shopping try the street markets at Cikrikcilar Yokusu, which is near Ulus Square. The markets are full of local handicrafts and other interesting items, from satin fabrics to ornaments perfect for souvenirs. After a stroll though the markets you can stop off at the Sherlock Holmes Pub, which has a great atmosphere with classic pub food and a disco from Wednesday through to Saturday.

Not far away from Ankara are the picturesque rolling mountains of Cappadocia, where you will find many interesting monasteries and cave dwellings built many years ago. The soil in this area is particularly fertile and rich, making it perfect for growing grapes. The area has many vineyards, which are quite famous in the area. Tours and tastings are available and can make for a very enjoyable time.

Transportation Around Ankara

Ankara's Esenboga International Airport is situated just 20 miles from the city centre. The airport receives daily domestic flights and many international arrivals from most European cities. There are express night trains departing from Istanbul's Haydarpasa Train Station arriving in Ankara daily. Alternatively you can take a bus from Istanbul, which takes approximately six hours.

Although Ankara is considered a safe city it is best to be alert to petty crime such as pickpockets and bag snatchings. In busy tourist areas make sure to keep all your valuables locked in the hote safe. Confidence scams are also common around tourist areas so be extra careful when approached by strangers. For these reasons and general peace of mind, it is advised to take out travel insurance for you and your family before leaving for your holiday.
