Madrid Travel Guide

Madrid is Spain's grand capital and the financial hub for southwest Europe. The city's rich culture and history merge well with its modern chic and sophistication. The locals enjoy variety and their spirit reflects the air of Spanish elegance and excitement.

Puerta del Sol is the centre for many of Madrid's major roads and it is also the most popular spot for relaxing and a hub for the city's energetic nightlife. Trendy cafés and restaurants are plentiful here, as are several noteworthy buildings.

The government headquarters are located in the Casa de Correos. Directly opposite is the El Oso y El Madroño, the city's official symbol featuring a bear. Rich Byzantine architecture defines the Church of San Miguel, created by Francisco Arbós y Tremantí with great attention to detail, and the vibrant façade adds a finishing touch.

Tourist Attractions of Madrid

Don't forget to check out Madrid's museums, with the 'Golden Museum Triangle' home to extensive fine art collections. A highlight for some in Madrid is seeing a real bull fight, with the oldest ring in Spain situated in the capital - Las Ventas Bullring.

Just 25 miles from Madrid is Alcala de Henares. Stroll the University of Alcoa and discover its 16th century architecture, or visit the home of the famous Spanish writer Cervantes, which has now been converted into a museum offering tours.

Just 30 miles from Madrid is the 16th century palace of San Loranzo de El Escorial, a World Heritage site. Part of the complex, the Pantheon of the Kings, is the gravesite of many of Spain's Habsburg and Bourbon kings and queens.

Transportation Around Madrid

Barajas International Airport is just northeast of downtown Madrid. It connects to South American cities and most other parts of the world with daily direct and connecting flights. Madrid is also the hub for train service to other parts of Spain.

Madrid is a bustling city complete with activities for all ages. While planning your trip, be sure to take out travel insurance before leaving home.
