Fresh research has said that the contents of the average Briton’s beach bag are worth well over £3,000.

The news comes via a recent report commissioned by travel cover provider Debenhams Travel Insurance, which said that jewellery, electronics and the like have pushed the figure up to £3,395 in recent years.

Experts say the news highlights the importance of taking out coverage before setting out on holiday and follows a recent survey that shows most Britons leave home without ample coverage to account for the value of their luggage in the event of loss or theft.

According to researchers, the value of beach bags has risen five-fold in the last decade, as the average bag now contains around £500 worth of jewellery, in addition to things like top-end sunglasses, smartphones and dozens of other high-value items.

Debenhams personal finance head Mike Hazell said to reporters that the need for cover is underlined by the fact that around 75 per cent of travellers are likely to leave their pricey bags on the sand unattended whilst bathing in the sea. He said that his organisation continues to advise consumers never to leave valuables unattended, even in “low-risk” situations.

Meanwhile, recent figures have shown that up to a third of British holidaymakers travelled without any coverage on their most recent holiday.
