A Canadian woman is unable to be transported home following a maritime accident in Croatia.

Twenty-four-year-old Anna Leibenko of Toronto slipped and fell 10 feet from the side of a boat earlier this week, causing serious injuries and sending her into a coma. According to her brother Artem, the woman suffered brain bleeding and severe damage to her face and skull when her head hit the side of the vessel.

Leibenko, whose fall occurred as she and friends were about to jump in the sea for a dip during the Croatia's ‘Yacht Week’, remains on life support in a critical care unit in a hospital in Split.

Artem described his sister as being “cheerful” and said that she always had a smile on her face.

As Anna had not taken out travel cover before leaving on her holiday, Artem and family are asking for donations on Facebook and Twitter to cover costs. The Leibenko said on Tuesday that they’ve already raised over CAD $30,000 (£19,000), but hospital bills have already amounted to $20,000 (£12,750) and the cost of an air ambulance is reportedly $93,000 (£59,000).

Reports said Anna was the only one of her group of three friends that had not taken out travel insurance before leaving for the European holiday.
