The Canadian and Turkish flag carriers have signed a fresh codeshare deal, officials said on Monday.

According to an official statement from Air Canada, the new agreement will go into force beginning in the second quarter of next year and will provide smoother connections for Star Alliance passengers.

Experts say that the move will provide a foundation for Air Canada’s forthcoming route between Toronto and Istanbul, which is scheduled to launch this summer pending regulatory approval.

Air Canada’s president and chief executive Calin Rovinescu said in a statement that his airline was “delighted” to offer “seamless connections” for those travelling on both carriers via a single itinerary. He went on to say that the firm is looking forward to welcoming Turkish Airlines customers on the Air Canada route network.

Similarly, Turkish Airlines president and chief executive Temel Kotil, Ph.D, told the media that his airline was “extremely excited” about the deal and that the agreement was the latest example of the carrier’s efforts to allow customers to fully maximise travel opportunities.

Customers booking codeshare flights on a single itinerary will be allowed to accrue frequent flier points on either airline, according to the release.
