A survey conducted by moneysupermarket.com, determined that only 53 per cent of UK travellers purchase travel insurance for every trip they take.

The study also showed that some travellers consider the length of a trip and their destination in considering when to buy – or when not to buy – travel cover. One-fourth of the people surveyed indicated that they only purchased travel insurance when travelling outside the UK; and one-tenth reported that they only bought travel insurance for long-haul trips.

The head of the insurance division at moneysupermarket.com, Peter Gerrard, said that travellers are often swept up in the excitement of planning their holiday or actually setting off on a trip, and forget about insurance altogether, or relegate it to the background.

“Taking this risk is not such a good idea considering four-fifths (81 per cent) of Brits fall ill whilst on holiday,” he commented.

Gerrard argued that having the right travel insurance is necessary for making claims regarding trip cancellations, loss of money or property and for emergency medical treatment. He also noted that having the insurance gives travellers peace of mind, in knowing that if anything goes wrong they’re protected.
