Before travelling, there are essential things to check: passport, tickets, money and travel insurance. With the launch of the Green passport campaign, there could be a new pre-travel tick in the checkbox that for some, will become as indispensable as the traditional travel essentials.

The Green Passport campaign launched at the Berlin Tourism Fair last week, and the campaign, based on the internet, is aimed at raising awareness of traveller’s decisions on the road and how their choices affect the environment. Achim Steiner, executive director of the United Nations Environmental Programme says, ‘Packing a Green Passport along with airline tickets, the swimming costume and the sun lotion means tourists no longer need to leave their green credentials at home but can make them part of the holiday of a lifetime.'

Tips on the website include things like being aware of your energy consumption and how to choose hotels with green credentials. Other tips include buying local products and souvenirs, and participating in the growing number of carbon offset schemes offered by accommodations and airlines. The launch of the campaign was co-sponsored by the Brazilian Ministries of Environment and Tourism, the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning.
