The pound’s value has dropped by over 20 per cent against the US dollar since the autumn of last year. The UK Post Office is reporting, however, that there are still many items on Christmas shopping lists that are cheaper in New York than they are in London.

In the Post Office Travel Services' Shopping Guide, there is a comparison of prices for 10 items that might be found in a Christmas basket, including clothing and electrical items. What the Post Office found is that the cost of the total basket would be £175 more in London than it would be in New York.

"Many people will be travelling to the US before Christmas and they can still make significant savings if they do their homework in advance and shop for items that are traditionally cheaper across the Atlantic," said the Post Office’s head of travel, Helen Warburton. She warned, however, that savings won’t be at the same level they were a year ago, when £1 was worth $2, as compared with its current value of $1.45.
