Lawmakers in Washington have passed legislation amid a bid to end air traffic control cuts in the US.

According to a Reuters report issued on Thursday, the Senate has approved a bill that will give the US Department of Transportation the authority to tap into reserves in order to have sufficient funding for a temporary resolution scheme.

The news comes amid widespread flight disruptions around the US that have had a knock-on effect on flights worldwide after automatic spending cuts went into force last month when lawmakers were unable to compromise on the federal budget.

Now, the measure could be brought into the House of Representatives as early as Friday, according to reports.

Should the law gain final approval it would allow the US Federal Aviation Administration to contract equipment and workers at alternate towers in US airspace in order to help alleviate the ongoing troubles.

Maine senator Susan Collins told the media that she was “delighted” to announce that lawmakers were moving forward with a solution to a problem that was a serious issue for the US economy and the traveling public.
