A Guernsey-based airline is looking to recoup the cost of delays from the airport’s operators.
According to a BBC report published last week, state-backed commercial airline Aurigny is seeking compensation for prolonged delays as a result of equipment shortages during poor weather at Guernsey airport.
Officials for the carrier say that the absence of the instrument landing approach system (ILS) has been the source of numerous disruptions in recent months. The facility’s ILS equipment was recently removed amid an £80 million improvement scheme, which will see the airfield expanded moved about 120 metres westward.
However, the airport’s head official Colin Le Ray has said that recent fog events have been severe enough that the ILS approach would not have been sufficient enough to help airlines avoid delays.
But Aurigny’s director of flight operations David Rice told the media that there were situations over the past winter in which the instrument landing system would have allowed flights to operate on schedule.
Airport officials said the ILS system is due to be back online in July.
