Winter sports enthusiasts face higher costs for the treatment of injuries this year, travel insurance industry experts have warned.

The bulletin comes following a recent analysis by officials from Sainsbury’s Bank Travel Insurance, which revealed that medical treatment in the majority of Britons’ favourite ski holiday locations has increased in cost in recent years.

Sainsbury's experts examined injury claims from the 2009/2010 and 2011/2012 seasons, comparing the costs of emergency medical treatment. Transport including airlifts and ambulances were included in the analysis.

Among the priciest regions, treatment in the US and Canada once again took the top spot as the most costly, with the average bill in North America totalling to £3,483. Meanwhile, European destinations entailed much lower costs, although prices in the region have increased by as much as 52 per cent in some areas over the last two seasons.

Officials from the insurance provider said that the report illustrates the importance of taking out proper travel coverage before heading overseas for a ski holiday and noted that a European Health Insurance Card only provides basic coverage and is not a suitable replacement for travel insurance.
