Despite only around 8 centimetres of snow falling late on Saturday and early on Sunday, Heathrow airport closed one of its runways for the latter half of the weekend, forcing the cancellation of nearly half of all scheduled departures. Additionally, the domino effect caused substantial delays at a handful terminals throughout the region, effecting more than 18,000 passengers, most of whom which in the UK.

Meanwhile, Gatwick airport reported no delays and that it would stay “open for business” amid the storm, whilst Stansted said it was operating as normal but some flights had been delayed. Both facilities are advising passengers to check schedules before heading to the airport.

Birmingham airport also saw substantial snowfall; the facility reported having cleared nearly 20 tonnes of accumulation from its runways through the weekend and into Monday.

Other airports in Europe saw frigid and even record low temperatures, but largely remained unaffected. Six of some 350 flights were cancelled in Stockholm on Sunday, whilst Copenhagen airport saw no weather-related delays despite four inches of snow. Meanwhile, Munich airport also saw almost no disruptions in spite of temperatures plunging below -27C.
