You would think it obvious – if you’re heading for a holiday likely to include any adventure sports, you should make sure you have plenty of insurance cover for all activities and eventualities. Perhaps it’s because we often don’t realise the real risks. Or maybe it’s because many fail to realise the costs and implications of accidents abroad. A recent survey seems to indicate that few travellers give the issue enough consideration.

The costs and complexities of getting sick or injured abroad can be huge. In some countries – the USA, for example – treatment for even a minor injury can be fraught with legal concerns and high costs. As adventure sports, or even just skiing or cycling, become increasingly popular holiday activities, the problem becomes greater.

The online travel bookings website, LateRooms.com recently conducted a survey of British holidaymakers. The survey discovered that few people gave proper attention to getting insurance of a suitable type and cover. Many Brits will happily spend hours poring over the selection of accommodation and flights but will devote less than 60 minutes to the task of choosing insurance.

If your holiday includes activities like skiing or any kind of water sports, you may need extra insurance cover. Check with your insurance provider. Furthermore, the level of cover required is much higher if you’re holidaying in the USA than for trips to mainland Europe.
