TripAdvisor has recently conducted a study of 3,700 international travellers, and learned that 45 per cent of UK tourists at some point made a claim on their travel insurance policies, as compared to 29 per cent of all travellers participating in the survey.

Of those who did make a claim, 22 per cent reported that the process was a very frustrating one, and 26 per cent indicated that it took them an excessively long time to recount the story behind their claim to the insurance company.

Other problems were noted by Brits when making an insurance claim, as well, such as 23 per cent saying that dealing with the claims department was particularly annoying, and the 31 per cent saying that the company made substantiating their claim a hassle.

Despite all the annoyances, however, only 14 per cent of UK travellers who were survey reported that their claims had been denied.

And while it is well-documented that travel insurance provides important protection for families on holiday when something goes wrong, Norwich Union research shows that it is often at the bottom of the list for holidaymakers when preparing for their trip.
