Cruise holidays are more popular than ever but the mystique surrounding how much to tip a waiter or room steward can be daunting and confusing.

Tipping practices are varied and although “discretionary” there are rules and various guidelines depending on where you are cruising, who the cruise company is, whether you are travelling with children and what type of accommodation you book.

Information about Tipping on Cruise Ships

*Advice is based around the following variations in tipping rules -

  • Cruise ship companies may include tipping within the overall price.
  • Children on cruise ships can be exempt from tipping
  • Many cruising companies have a daily rate
  • Customers can be charged more when hiring a suite

Carnival Cruise lines;

Recommends a daily rate of £6.40 a day

Crystal Cruises;

Tipping and gratuities are included in the overall price.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines;

Do not wish their staff to be given cash in envelopes and has an automatic daily fee of £4.00. Customers can alter or cancel this amount if they wish to tip staff directly. The tipping charge will be added to the bill although it is “discretionary”.

MSC Cruises;

Older children pay 50% of the adult tipping rate onboard.

Oceania Cruises;

Has a tipping rate of £8.60 per day.

P&O Cruises;

Do not wish their staff to accept cash in envelopes are in favour of a daily charge. Have introduced a daily charge of £3.10 – customers do have the chance to alter or cancel this amount if they would prefer to tip staff directly. The tipping charge although “discretionary” will be added to the bill.

Princess Cruises;

Has a tipping rate of £7.35 per day which includes payment of behalf of any children on the cruise.

Seabourn;

Tipping and gratuities are included in the overall price.

Seven Seas Cruises;

Tipping and gratuities are included in the overall price.

Silversea;

Tipping and gratuities are included in the overall price.

If during this 14 day period you have travelled, made a claim or intend to make a claim then we can recover all costs that you have used for those services. Please note that your cancellation rights are no longer valid after this initial 14 day period.
