About the Resort
This resort, although called Heavenly, is not as serene and pleasing to the eye as one might hope. It is a sprawling resort with a mixture of low and high rise hotels, motels and restaurants. It does have a new 'village' which is going some way to cunjuring up a feeling of a more traditional ski resort. The setting is spectacular and the views of Lake Tahoe and Nevada are breathtaking. The accommodation is good value with ane exciting night life scene. There are a number of other resorts within an hours drive of Heavenly.
About the Mountains near Heavenly
There are some good beginner slopes here at the California base lodge, although the majority will favour the intermediate skier. Experts will prefer to wander over to the Nevada side of the resort, the resort is on California's border with Nevada. The slopes are navigated via a complicated system and quite a few of the links between sectors involve flat tracks. There is a Gondola from South Lake Tahoe to the Village and it is an effecient addition to the resort. On the Californian side there are four main sectors and on the Nevada side there are three main bowls. Snow making facilities are great providing excellent skiing conditions.
Après Ski at Heavenly
The mountain restaurants are not adequate if you are used to the better European resorts. The cafeterias can become extremely overcrowded and uncomfortable in bad weather. The 'Eat what you Like' buffets at casino hotels are the place to be for value for money and some offer great views. The resort offers most of the world's cuisine from Chinese to Italian and Mexican. The apre ski in Nevada revolves around Casinos and live acts.
