The average night stay in UK hotel has become significantly more expensive over the last year, new figures reveal.

According to researchers commissioned last month by online tour operator TripAdvisor, the average rate in hotels throughout the United Kingdom grew by nearly 30 per cent over the past 12 months. Experts say that the trend suggests that hotel operators have become increasingly more confident in the market but note that the rise was certainly affected by last year’s London Games.

TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay said in a statement that the results were surprising to his research team. He went on to add that many hotels have likely raised rates in recent months due to the rising popularity of the ‘staycation’ in Britain.

One of the sharpest rises was seen in four- and five-star hotels in Britain; the average night stay for such properties in Birmingham is now at £92.70 through the month of August, compared to just £62.69 during the same month last year – a rise of almost 47 per cent.
