Glasgow airport recently saw its Busiest June in half a decade.

According to a BBC report published on Thursday, the Scottish gateway saw a massive influx of passengers headed to sunny holiday hotspots last month, notably the Canary Islands, Turkey, Portugal and the Balearics.

Official figures from the airport’s operator revealed this week that the boost – prompted largely by dreary weather in Scotland – marked a 5.2 per cent increase in international traffic for the month. In addition, domestic business traffic rose by 5.7 per cent, according to the report, marking the busiest June seen at the airport since 2008.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow airport, told the media that it was “an exciting time” for the airport.

Glasgow now hosts about 30 airlines with nonstop flights to more than 100 destinations, according to the BBC report.

Likewise, Edinburgh airport saw a similar boost last month; officials from the airport reported earlier this week that nearly 950,000 passengers moved through the facility in June, marking a year-on-year increase of nearly 8.4 per cent.
