About half of Americans are unaware of what travel insurance can and cannot provide, a new report has shown.

The news comes via a recent survey conducted by consumer travel specialist ThePointsGuy; whose figures also revealed that only about 37 per cent of all US-based holidaymakers believe that travel insurance is worth the cost.

Among other numbers, only around 7 per cent of respondents said that they always book trip coverage whilst some 14 per cent said they usually opt to do so.

Trip cancellation is the primary reason for taking out coverage with 52 per cent citing it as their number one priority, whilst medical expenses came in second place at about 27 per cent, according to the report.

Founder Brian Kelly said on behalf of ThePointsGuy that taking out insurance can be “extraordinarily” important in many scenarios, especially for trips to international locations with limited access to ample medical care.

He went on to add however that many people are unaware that many policies do not protect against a number of situations for trip cancellation and that all travellers should check to see what sort of protection is provide by their credit card companies.
