A British mother has unexpectedly given birth abroad and is stuck with a hefty bill because she didn’t take out travel insurance.

According to a Daily Mail report issued at the weekend, 25-year-old Zowie Lyons was on holiday in Spain when her baby girl decided to enter the world a full 13 weeks early. The event has since caught Zowie and her 20-year-old boyfriend Sam Hilton off guard, as they are stranded in Alicante because they left home without travel insurance.

Meanwhile, their daughter Ellizeah, who was born weighing just two pounds, is doing fine but needed several operations and round-the-clock medical attention due to her premature birth. And the price of getting her home safely will cost a whopping £12,000 because they will need special travel arrangements for the delicate child.

Zowie told the media that although she is glad that her daughter is okay that she and sam are quite unlucky that they are faced with the challenge of raising enough money to get back to the UK.

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire & Humber Infant & Children’s Transport Team said they are on standby and are ready to transport the new family back to Leeds General Infirmary.
