Formal dress requirements for Cunard Cruise passengers have been scaled back.

Officials from the cruise and ferry company said on Wednesday that formal nights on its ships have been changed to just two nights per week on Scandinavian and Mediterranean sailings and three nights weekly on transatlantic journeys.

Moreover, dress designations for each night will now be labelled simply ‘formal’ or ‘informal’; prior to the change they were designated as ‘elegant casual’, ‘semi-formal’ or ‘formal’, according to a Huffington Post published on Wednesday. However, passengers can still choose not to dress up on designated formal nights but will only have access to the Garden Lounge, the Winter Garden and the main buffet areas on those evenings.

Cunard’s president and managing director Peter Shanks told the media that the move comes follow research that revealed that there are some that avoid luxury cruises with Cunard because they view the line as being old-fashioned and too formal.

The move will go into force this season and will affect the Queen Victoria, the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary 2, reports said this week.
