A recent study has shown that a surprising amount of British Columbia residents travel abroad without insurance.

The figures come via a fresh report published by TD, which revealed that more than half of the province's inhabitants head abroad regularly without taking out travel coverage of any kind.

Experts say the figures are particularly concerning because many travellers head to nearby destinations in the United States, where the average hospital stay costs in excess of CAD $10,000.

Dave Minor said on behalf of TD however that the results are not surprising because the majority of travellers are unaware that benefits are exceptionally limited outside of Canada. He noted that essentials such as hospital accommodation, physician and nursing fees, lab costs, diagnostics and prescriptions are not included.

Experts say that travel insurance customers also need to be careful with the fine print noted in any policy. Certain restrictions may apply on some high-risk activities and many incidents may not be covered when excessive drinking and/or drugs are involved.
