Airline passengers travelling through the eastern US are facing substantial weather disruptions in the coming days.

The news comes as a major storm approaches the densely populated US East Coast; forecasters say the storm is likely to drop up to eight inches of snow in Washington and up to 10 inches in Boston. The storm also has taken its toll on several other areas in the region, including Virginia and the Carolinas, where heavy rainfall continues, whilst places as far west as Chicago have seen up to 11 inches of snow.

By Monday night, more than 1,700 flights had been cancelled on the East Coast as a result of the storm, whilst some 1,200 more were scrapped on Tuesday. And at least an additional 1,100 more were likely on Wednesday, according to reports.

Meanwhile, a winter storm warning remains in effect through early on Thursday morning in many areas across the region, according to officials from the National Weather Service.

Despite the strength and location of the storm, New York will probably be spared the worst. Meteorologists said Wednesday that The Big Apple should see only four inches of snow or less, largely due to warm temperatures that will prevent flakes from accumulating for several hours after the storm’s arrival.
