A new report from consumer group Which? has revealed a high level of dissatisfaction among travel insurance customers.

According to the group’s recent survey, travel insurance policies have higher rates of claim rejection than any other type of insurance, including auto, home, phone and pet insurance.

Which? officials said the results come from a survey of more than 9,000 consumers and that the results reiterate that consumers must be fully aware of all aspects of a given policy before purchasing.

Among the most common reasons for rejection were not having reported stolen property to local police within 24 hours of an incident, customers wanting to cancel a trip due to sick relatives, as well as stolen property not having been attended to according to the insurer’s standards – commonly referred to as “unattended belongings”.

Still, Mark Simmonds, the consular policy minister, said that it remains extremely important that holidaymakers invest in comprehensive travel insurance before setting out. He said this is particularly important to prevent major financial loss in the case of falling ill whilst abroad.
