Tiger Airways’ head official has resigned to take on a leading role at Jetstar.

Andrew David, chief executive of Tiger Airways’ Australian arm, stepped down on Thursday after only a year in the role to take on a new position at Jetstar, the low-cost subsidiary of flag carrier Qantas.

The move comes just over a month after Qantas’ rival Virgin Australia acquired a major stake in Tiger – 60 per cent – although the deal must first gain approval from Australian regulatory authorities. Virgin officials have not yet commented on who might take over as chief in the event that the deal is given the green light.

Meanwhile, David is set to begin as the head of Jetstar’s long-haul division at the start of the new fiscal year in June. He has previously served as a senior official for both Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.

According to Jetstar chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka, Mr David will play a key role in the integration of new aircraft – notably the Boeing 787 Dreamliner – in to the Jetstar fleet in the coming year. She told the media that he has a keen sense of the low-cost model as well as the carrier’s primary markets.
