Retailer Woolworths has announced it will soon offer car and travel insurance products to Australian customers.

The move comes a year after the firm introduced its first Australian insurance products. Officials also said that the company would offer contents and home insurance later in the year. Experts say the move comes amid heavy competition with supermarket chain Coles to vamp up insurance products.

Reports said that Woolworths insurance will employee the services of The Hollard Group and Insurers Swiss Re for travel and car cover; The Hollard Group is already the firm’s provider for life insurance and pet insurance products.

George Hughes, the company’s head of insurance services said that the retailer is looking to make travel and motor coverage affordable, easy and accessible for Woolworths customers following the successful implementation of pet and life insurance services. He added that there are already plenty of cheap insurance providers on the market but he said that cheap is often not the best choice when it comes to insurance and that many consumers find out the hard way.

Woolworths said is planning to make all of the current and new products easy to understand for customers by using simple, plain policy language.
