French authorities say the £2 devices are necessary to ensure that motorists are able to test themselves to makes sure they are within the legal limit to be able to drive. The new measure will be implemented in July and will apply to anyone operating a car within French borders.

Meanwhile, Britons and drivers from other countries complain the law comes as the latest move by French authorities to draw revenue from holidaymakers. Visiting motorists already face fines for not having a fluorescent safety vest and a triangle in a vehicle.

Some critics also say that the accuracy of the kits is not up to par. Head of safety for the AA, Andrew Howard, said that it can take some time before consumed alcohol enters the bloodstream, meaning that readings provided by the devices are often misleading. He said that generally the kits would need to be used at least 40 minutes after the latest drink to ensure the most accurate reading possible.

Motorists caught without the breathalyzer kits will be fined 11 euros (£9), although authorities have said that French police will not begin issuing penalties until a grace period expires in November.
