The Association of British Travel Agents-backed recommendations to John Penrose came this week via the Smart Regulation and Economic Growth – Seizing the Tourism Opportunity report issued by the Government-commissioned Tourism Regulation Taskforce.

In the report, consultants endorse ABTA’s recommendations that ministers move to reduce beurucratic restrictions that it says are limiting growth among the UK tourism industry.

The group pinpointed several key areas where it says action would be most effective, including removing FSA regulations from travel insurance sales and reshaping laws designed to prevent money laundering that have adverse effects on currency exchange firms. Making the visa process quicker and simpler is another measure outlined in the document.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of ABTA, said to media this week that it had set up a ‘Red Tape Taskforce’ and that it called on Mr Penrose to accept the “sensible recommendations” put forth and to take concrete action to follow through with them.

The group said that by moving forward with the anti-red tape measures the Government could provide “very real benefits” to thousands of UK business.
