Gritters were out servicing trunk roads on Sunday night but freezing rain had continued to create dangerous icy conditions, Traffic Scotland said. The agency issued ice and snow warnings for Central, Tayside, Fife, the Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway for much of the day on Monday.

Officials also said that at least one lane the M90 would remain closed for much of the day on the northbound side at the Arlary Junction (Junction 8) as a result of numerous accidents and the continued presence of black ice. Gritters continue to treat roads in the area.

Meanwhile, snow is falling at higher altitudes, although the A9 between the Blair Atholl Road and Dalwhinnie in Drumocther remains open though officials advise motorists to use caution.

A five car crash was reported early on Monday at the Annan to Eaglesfield Road, whilst a separate three-car incident had closed the A711 between Palnackie and Auchencairn. Similarly, as many as five cars had reportedly slid off of the A714 just south of Newton Stewart.

According to the Met Office, the risk of dangerous driving conditions would increase through the day as sleet, snow and rain continue to push into the region from the west during the early morning hours.
