The news comes via consumer group Defaqto, which said in addition to many policies wholly excluding favourite winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding from coverage, that the level of coverage varies greatly when such activities are included.

The group said that 80 per cent of trip insurance policies only offer £1,000 or less for stolen equipment. Similarly, in the case of hired equipment, most policies only provide £500 in coverage and 6 per cent of all policies provide no cover for hired equipment at all.

The report also revealed that 5 per cent of policies offered no cover for fatalities and severe conditions, and more than half only provide £20 or less per day whilst 43 per cent have a £200 maximum on such matters.

Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance policies at Defaqto, said that consumers need to pinpoint the exact type of cover they’ll need for each holiday and should focus on ensuring they receive the right level and type of cover required. He added that although price should be a consideration, buying the cheapest possible policy can often become a very expensive decision if the policy doesn’t offer ample cover for holidays or personal possessions.
