The long-held suspicions of men that their partners go overboard when it comes to packing for a holiday appear to have been confirmed by a recent study. The travel survey found that women do indeed tend to pack twice as much stuff as they really need to take with them on summer holidays.

The average woman in Britain was found to pack 44 pieces of clothing for a fortnight getaway but wears slightly more than half (61 per cent) of those clothes. Dame Average Brit was found to pack six bikinis, 12 skirts or pairs of shorts and 18 tops.

Of that pile of clothing, women were found to wear just six skirts or pairs of shorts, 12 tops and three bikinis. Any space left in the baggage was found to be occupied by shoes, in what is perhaps yet another easily-predicted move.

The average woman was found to pack eight pairs of shoes for a two-week trip. Of the 3,000 British women who were surveyed, more than 25 per cent, said they packed 10 pairs of shoes. A whopping three quarters of them, however, ended up wearing just six pairs of those shoes.

Men are likely to be upset by not just the unnecessary weight of all that baggage. The survey found that the average value of the clothes in that suitcase was put at £1,140.

The ‘revelations’ were generated by a study carried out on behalf of The Co-operative’s travel insurance unit.
