Following the resignation of Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson, Keith Brown has been named as his successor. Mr Stevenson quit his post in the Scottish Government over the way he handled the havoc that resulted from severe winter weather last week.

Mr Brown’s existing post, Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, will be taken over by Angela Constance, an SNP backbencher. Her promotion is pending approval by parliament.

Mr Brown said he had enjoyed being able to make a positive contribution to the education system in Scotland. He added that he was looking forward to assuming the role of transport and infrastructure minister and dealing with challenges inherent in the post.

Alex Almond, First Minister, praised Mr Brown’s excellence in the job of minister for skills and lifelong learning. Mr Almond went on to say that Mr Brown was fully capable of addressing the ‘unprecedented’ challenges created by recent heavy winter weather and would be able to prepare for the future challenges.

The transport minister’s role formerly included responsibility for climate change. That responsibility is being transferred to the position of Environment Minister, a role currently held by Roseanna Cunningham.
