The UK is experiencing major travel disruptions, as bitterly cold temperatures and repeated heavy snowfalls stymie efforts to keep airports, railway lines and highways open. Both Gatwick and Edinburgh airports were forced to close overnight, after crews were unable to keep runways clear.

If you’re planning to fly away on holiday in the next couple of days, it’s a good idea to follow weather reports and travel developments. If you cannot reach the airport, or your flight is delayed or cancelled, you could end up needing to claim on your travel insurance.

Both Edinburgh and Gatwick airports had to shut, meaning flights were delayed and cancelled. Gatwick airport said it would not open for flights before 10am today and expected further significant delays, disruptions and cancellations. Edinburgh Airport said it hoped to be back in operation by 10am but passengers should contact their airline to confirm their flight.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) was advising travellers to review their travel insurance policies before they leave home. They need to ensure the policies they have provide cover for delayed or cancelled flights. The FCO also said passengers should contact their airlines to confirm whether they should travel to the airport.
