Leading online travel booking site Expedia.com has marked the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by announcing a major expansion of its eco-friendly hotel range.

Expedia.com launched its Green Hotel program in April 2008. With this latest announcement, Expedia.com now offers more than 1,700 certified green hotels - six times as many as it had available for travellers last year.

Expedia.com’s Tim MacDonald, senior vice president and general manager, spoke about Expedia.com’s continued focus on the eco-friendly travel market. He said the range of green-certified hotels, carbon-offset flight options and environmental tips offered by Expedia.com gives travellers a one-stop shop and supports the rising trend in socially-responsible travel.

Hotels in the Expedia.com Green Hotel program are certified by a number of organizations, including Green Key, Green Seal, LEEDS and STEP.

The Expedia.com Green Hotels programme is supported by a range of over 1,700 supply partners and in excess of 80 green-certification programmes.

In addition, Expedia.com has joined TerraPass to create carbon-offset bundles. The bundles, based on distance flown, provide funding for clean-energy and carbon-reduction projects.

Expedia.com offers travellers a range of money-saving eco-friendly travel packages. Adding a TerraPass to a trip is easily done through the “Travel Accessories” section on the site’s trip customisation page.
