A serious security breach is said to have occurred after a bomb was found in the cargo deck of a Kingfisher flight. The small round package was discovered on a Bangalore to Thiruvananthapuram flight on Sunday morning. Kingfisher has recently won awards for their service and safety records and have been named India’s only five-star airline.

The bomb was detected and defused by authorities and it is believed that gunpowder was found on the newspaper that the bomb was wrapped in. The exact composition of the bomb will not, however, be known until further tests are carried out.

Five separate teams have been set up to investigate the incident, one of which will be sent to Thiruvananthapuram. It is not yet clear whether the bomb was placed on the plane in Thiruvananthapuram or Bangalore.

Loading staff and ground staff are also being questioned by police as CCTV footage is being examined. The security lapse is strongly suspected to have occurred at Bengaluru International Airport, despite the airport being guarded by CISF and being under a constant terror alert.

The responsibility for screening baggage is, however, in the hands of the individual Airlines and it is not yet clear how a package like this could have been overlooked. The flight, which left Bangalore at 6:25am on Sunday morning was carrying 27 passengers.
