The latest edition of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guide offers medical recommendations aimed at helping American travelers prepare for trips abroad and to stay healthy while they are traveling.

In the guide, there is information dealing with the major health risks that could be encountered in various countries, as well as recommended and required vaccinations, suggestions regarding jet lag, cruise ship travel, and traveling with children and family members with disabilities. There is also a section on international adoptions.

The 2010 edition of the travel health guide also features a new section on medical tourism, which is becoming more common as Americans seek more affordable medical procedures abroad, in combination with a vacation. Recent figures estimate that over a half million Americans have traveled aboard for health care.

Travel health experts from popular destinations were chosen as contributing authors for the latest edition, with the aim of educating readers about the conditions and health risks at various exotic locations. It is pointed out in the guide that medical standards vary significantly from country to country, which is important to understand when travelling or seeking health care abroad.
