The updated advisory came as the World Health Organisation (WHO) upgraded its global threat level as cases of the swine flu increased.

Earlier, the EU health commissioner had issued a warning against nonessential travel to affected areas by the H1N1 virus.

The Foreign Office’s advisory was also issued before a Scottish couple, visiting Cancun, Mexico on their honeymoon, were confirmed as having swine flu after they returned home.

Cruise operators on western Caribbean itineraries are cancelling calls at Mexican ports.

Anyone who has travelled to Mexico and develops flu-like symptoms is being urged to consult a physician.

It is also being recommend that Britons in Mexico should also kissing in greeting, shaking hands, large crowds of people and using the Mexico City subway at this time. More than 150 people in Mexico are thought to have died after contracting the disease.

Androulla Vassiliou, the EU health commissioner, said during a BBC interview: "I'd try to avoid non-essential travel to the areas which are reported to be in the centre of the cluster to minimise the personal risk and to reduce the potential risk to spread the infection to other people."
