This new concern about theft during holidays abroad comes as UK residents are embarking on their annual breaks and travellers are being urged to ensure that they have adequate travel insurance before leaving home.

According to research conducted by Tesco Travel Money, just under 10 per cent of UK holidaymakers have experienced theft on their travels abroad – typically having their wallets stolen. The most affected group is the young traveller, at 23 per cent.

The research report also revealed that seven per cent of theft victims have had possessions stolen from hotel safes or safe deposit boxes.

Many UK travellers are planning on taking substantial amounts of money abroad with them, in spite of the weakened economy. Nearly 63 per cent reported that they were not likely to set a daily maximum for their spending while on holiday.

As airlines reduce the number of flights they offer, and airfares increase, travellers are also being reminded to look for savings on travel insurance. Some analysts are indicating that airline customers could be seeing the end of cheap airfares.
