Not having proper travel cover might not be so troublesome if the problem encountered is a small one, but it could end up being quite costly if there’s a need to fly home early, or require extensive hospital care as the result of an accident. The Foreign Office has released data showing that injury or illness that resulting in the need for an airlift home from the US can cost up to £45,000. Just two days’ stay in a hospital at a Mediterranean seaside resort can cost as much as £1,600.

Simply having travel insurance might not be sufficient, however. The UK travel-insurance industry is fiercely competitive when it comes to the prices offered consumers, meaning that companies reduce what is covered on the cheaper deals offered. Knowing the type and amount of cover you require is key.

It doesn’t necessarily matter how or where the cover is purchase. At least one-third of the 20 million policies that UK travellers take out annually are bought at a bank, a supermarket or from a broker. One-fourth are bought from a travel or tour operator, and another one-fourth are purchased directly from the insurance company.
