British holidaymakers often want more from a break than time at the beach. New research from the insurance agency esure reports that more Britons are looking for an adrenaline rush while on holiday, but are often unaware that their conventional travel cover won’t be sufficient for high-risk adventure.

One-fourth of British holidaymakers are reported to be choosing destinations based on whether adventure sports are available, and nearly nine in ten per cent have actually taken part in these types of activities whilst on holiday. At the same time, one in ten wrongly believe that their standard travel insurance will cover adventurous pursuits, which in reality leaves them open to "hefty bills" if they are injured.

Mike Pickard, esure spokesperson, said: "With a surge in popularity of, and access to, more adventurous sports across the globe, it's crucial for holidaymakers to take out travel insurance and check they're covered before they try out the likes of white water rafting in Australia...Get injured and the medical bills could turn a paradise trip into a nightmare."

Statistics show that the top activities for Britons on holiday this year are jet-skiing, scuba diving and white water rafting. The insurance carrier advises holidaymakers to read the small print on their policies carefully, paying attention a section headed 'hazardous sports.’ They should also check to determine if there are specific clauses relating to any activity not covered by the policy.
