Since opening, Heathrow’s Terminal 5 has left thousands of people stranded, waiting in a gorgeous terminal building for delayed flights, cancelled flights and lost bags. Flying in an out of the terminal has given many travellers cause for a headache and a good reason for purchasing travel insurance.

Before flying MSN Money recommends that travellers not only purchase insurance but also familiarize themselves with their terms and know what level of compensation they can expect in case of a cancellation or delay in their flight plans.

Travellers who rely on airlines to remunerate them for delays and cancellations will be left out in the cold, as airlines are under no obligation to do so.

Travel insurance is also important for those who have become victims of baggage handling problems which are currently plaguing Terminal 5. Lost, delayed or damaged luggage has become a fairly frequent experience for flyers with British Airways and is one that travel insurance can help deal with.

A statement from BA recently acknowledged the airline’s difficulty handling bags in the new building. "As a result of the disruption yesterday, some customers' bags will be delayed. We are working hard to process the remaining bags as quickly as possible," the statement read.
