Traveling with Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints and breakdown of the joint’s cartilage and affects all ages with over 10,000 under 18's experiencing this condition and as many as 10 million people in the UK have artritis. There are in fact over 200 types of artritis, (rheumatic diseases) and the most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis(RA). Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK and if affects nearly 9 million people, while rheumatoid arthritis affects more than 400,000 people.

Medical Screening for Arthritis

If you are arthritic we will need to determine the severity of your condition. At the medical declaration section in our booking process you will be asked a number of questions. These questions are really straightforward. The questions may vary depending on your own individual condition but here are a few examples of what you may be asked.

What type of arthritis do you (or did you) have?

How many medicines do you take for your arthritis?

Do you currently use any mobility aids because of your arthritis?

Have you had any of your joints resurfaced or replaced?

Have you ever needed treatment for back or neck problems?

How many unplanned hospital admissions have you had for this condition?

As with most pre-existing medical conditions, the effect arthritis will have on your travel insurance premium will largely depend on the exact nature of your condition, and the extent to which it affects your daily life.
