Canada Ski Resort Guide for Fernie

Fernie Ski Resort Guide

About the Resort of Fernie

Like so many other towns, this one began in the early 1900's as a mining one. It has grown up over the years into a favourite for serious skiers from Alberta and BC. It has steep slopes and a good natural snow fall record. It is a resort that relies on it's visitors making the effort to getting around. It is set a little way up the mountainside and a couple of miles from the town of Fernie. It has a few bars and some small shops. There is a bus that runs every 30 mins from the town to the mountain at peak times. Most people stay in self catering accommodation although there are a few hotels.

About the Mountains near Fernie

The resort of Fernie has over 2500 acres of terrain. It has an excellent snow record and the snowmaking has also increased over the years. If you are an expert skier, the combination of heavy falls and steep terrain won't dissapoint. There are plenty of black and double black runs and it is possible to take part in back country runs with guides to include an overnight stay. The trail maps have drawn some particularly harsh criticism for their lack of clarity. Intermediates, on the contrary, may be disapointed with the lack of mileage on offer. There are plenty of blues but they could almost be blacks, so the timid intermediate may find it all a bit too much. The beginners will find a few good nursery slopes although finding decent green runs to emerge on to may be difficult.

Après Ski at Fernie

There are few mountain restaurants and they can be a bit basic. The resort does offer a far better choice in its restuarants which vary from Asian to Italian. The apres ski can be good fun if you are at the right place at the right time, there is plenty on offer although not all lively.
