The UK Foreign Office has issued a travel insurance warning for young holidaymakers headed abroad over the summer.

According to an article published by The Telegraph on Tuesday, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging adventurous young travellers to ensure they’ve taken out proper travel coverage for risky overseas activities.

Officials from the agency said in a statement that injuries associated with activities such as jet skiing – which may not be covered under some policies – can entail ‘sky high’ medical costs if they are not properly insured. Recent Post Office figures reveal that the average cost of a personal injury abroad is around £7,500, according to the report.

The bulletin follows a recent survey carried out by the FCO which revealed that as many as 45 per cent of British holidaymakers aged 16 to 24 do not check to see if their policy covers high-risk activities such as hiring a moped or bungee jumping.

FCO minister Mark Simmonds said in a statement that travellers should make sure that their policy includes everything they would want to do on a given holiday.
