Heathrow traffic grows 3.9% in March

Passenger figures saw a healthy increase at London’s Heathrow airport during March.

The airport’s operating firm Heathrow Airport Ltd – formerly the BAA – said on Friday that load factor grow by almost 4 per cent last month over the same month one year prior, primarily due to strong performance on European and Asian routes. Officials said that the growth was the result of many sun-seekers opting to holiday during March following a particularly dreary start to the year.

Flights to Asia saw some of the largest growth over the time frame, with Chinese traffic increasing by a whopping 15.1 per cent. Likewise, official figures airport saw combined growth of 5.1 per cent to some the world’s fastest growing economies – Brazil, China, Russia and India.

European destinations also performed well last month. Flights to France and Italy saw year-on-year growth of 18.9 per cent and 19.4 per cent, respectively, whilst Norwegian destinations saw a larger increase of almost 26 per cent, according to the firm’s official figures.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of Heathrow Airport Ltd, told the media that his firm was set to invest £3 billion into the airport in order to continue improvements for both passengers and airlines. He went on to note that the brand new Terminal 2 facility is set to launch in the summer of 2014.
