New European regulations have extended the rights of cruise ship passengers.

Reports said on Wednesday that the new EU measures will allow those travelling on a cruise to claim compensation for travel delays, much in the way that train and airline passengers are able to do so.

The amount of compensation varies on the individual claim, depending on the severity of the delay and the type of ticket booked. Passengers will generally be able to claim 25 to 50 per cent of the base fare for their journey.

Officials from the Passenger Shipping Association told the media that the move follows nearly two years of lobbying and working alongside European lawmakers and that the effort was designed to provide customers with the best rights possible.

In addition, this week’s changes also extend rights for people with reduced mobility, bringing cruise ship regulations in line with those available for disabled passengers travelling via plane, train or coach.

Meanwhile, travel experts continue to urge holidaymakers to take out a proper insurance policy prior to setting out in spite of the changes.
